Touch Point – A Walk In the Park

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Rev 3:20 NIV

Has a walk in the park ever changed your entire life? It did for Erick.

We were in Central Park. Bob was blowing up balloons and turning them into animals. Inside Out Ministries Team Member Debbie was giving away the balloons as she told children and their parents about Jesus. Our large sign advertising our free bracelets was draped across a park bench. Street musicians serenaded us with a guitar and flute duet. I spotted Erick as he walked over to watch the commotion we were causing.

“Hi,” I said. “We’re Christians. Would you like a bracelet?”

“Sure,” he said. Erick was 17 years old. He was about to begin his 12th grade.

“Are you a Christian?”

“I’m not sure. I pray every night. I’ve been going to church with my grandmother but I don’t know too much about it.”

“Have you ever invited Jesus to be a part of your life?”

“I guess not,” he said. “I ask Him for things but I’ve never asked Him to be a part of my life.”

“May I tell you the story of Jesus?” I asked as I pulled out my trusty EvangeCube.

“OK,” he nodded. He was fascinated by the cube and watched closely as I told the story of the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

When I got to the part where the nail scarred hand pulled the other hand out of hell, he gasped when I said, “This is your hand. He is waiting for you to reach out and take His hand.”

“Do you believe what I just told you?” I asked.

“I do,” he said.

“You’ve done the hard part,” I said. “You believe. Now all you have to do is to ask Jesus to be part of your life. The Bible says he stands at the door of your heart and knocks. Would you like to do that right now?”

“Yes,” he said. “I would.” We prayed together. Erick walked away a changed man. Becoming a Christian is as easy as a walk in the park.
