Travel Tip - Highway 212 - Montana/Wyoming
Travel Tip - Montana/Wyoming - Highway 212

I was fortunate enough to go inside a health food store in Cody, Wisconsin (see picture under Wyoming Roads.) I watched the owner help person after person with suggestions for natural remedies to various illnesses. Some were in person and some called on the phone. Everyone obviously knew and liked him.

I asked about what I came in for and he didn't have it. He saw my car and joked that he didn't supply special products for Jaguar fans. We talked football for little while.

He asked where I was from and where I was going. When I told him I was traveling across America, he made me sign his book. He said that when I became famous, he wanted to be able to prove I was there. He then asked me to go to the car and get my map. I certainly complied.

He showed Highway 212. He said Charles Kurault had rated this the #1 highway in the United States. He told me I had to travel this highway. I was on my way to Yellowstone and this route took me out of my way. I never considered not taking his suggestion. Thank God.

I was planning on camping in Yellowstone. This adventure cost me a hotel room because it took longer to get there than I thought. By the time I got to the beginning of the highway, it was too late to start across it. It was raining and very cold, so I decided to get a hotel in the city of Red Lodge, Montana.

The scenic part of Highway 212 starts in Red Lodge, Montana and ends in Yellowstone National Park. It travels along the borders between Montana and Wyoming.

On this highway, I met an elderly couple that had a very romantic story. They had only been married 5 years. They both were widowed and have children from the first marriages. They dated briefly in high school and lost all contact until after both spouses died. They met at a class reunion and fell in love all over again. As we talked on top of a beautiful mountain range, they agreed with me that God made a very beautiful world. They are both Christians, but their religions are different. They take turns attending each other's church. The gentleman told me that religion didn't matter because it was all the same God.

What makes this highway so spectacular is the variety of the sights and the dramatic and quick changes in the landscape. The views were simply breath taking. I hate to not be original, but so far, I agree with Charles.

You can see the highway in the pictures. There is no picture that can do this highway justice. It was worth the extra driving. I've been on scenic highways all over the world and this is the best one I've been on. It was worth the hotel room and the time. What a gift the man in the health food store gave me.
