Belle’s Musings
I Don’t Understand

I don’t understand why my Mommy takes me with her sometimes and other times, she leaves me alone inside Happy. Sometimes she leaves me inside a cage and once she left me for 3 days at a place called a kennel. What was she thinking?.

I was excited about visiting her friend Janice. I remember when Janice came to Jacksonville. I don’t normally like new people but Janice was fun. I did her a favor and decided to play with her. Boy was Mommy surprised. But when we got to Janice’s house, instead of letting me play with my friend, Mommy either left me inside Happy or put my cage inside Janice’s house and left me in it. I was incensed. Oh well, at least it was air-conditioned.

I have a noticed a pattern. If Mommy is going to be outdoors, she seems to take me. When she leaves me inside Happy, I’ve watched from the window and noticed that she is usually going indoors. I like walking outside but let’s face it, I’m a Sheltie and Sheltie’s have long hair. It’s been 100 degrees here and I’m built for playing in the snow. I’d like to see the inside of those buildings too. Don’t get me wrong – Happy isn’t so bad. He is air-conditioned, I have food and water, and I have plenty of places to sleep. I can always entertain myself by barking at people that walk by. I just don’t understand why she doesn’t take me in buildings. I’ve tried barking and nipping at her when she leaves and she just ignores me.

The worst was the kennel. Mommy was worried about that because I heard her talking on the phone. The conference she was going to didn’t allow dogs so she looked on the Internet for places to put me. She made a bunch of phone calls to kennels and she and Daddy had several calls about me. She even fretted to her friend Judy. Mommy kept telling me she was sorry but that she had to leave. Well, she should be sorry. Kennels are boring. Mommy said she liked this place because they had an air-conditioned inside run connected to an outside run. Palease… – did she really think I planned to leave the air-conditioning? She also said people were always there and would walk me several times a day. The good news is I got plenty of attention because I’m cute and humans seem to like it when I’m glad to see them and hide my face under their arm.

I’m happiest when I’m with my Mommy walking trails. We stop and talk to people and I love to hear her talking about God. Sometimes we sing on the trails. Mommy has always sung to me and she likes singing about God outdoors. We run together and I cut circles around her. It’s a Sheltie thing. If I’m quick, I can tangle her legs with my leash. She got mad at me the other day because the leash cut her legs. She told Daddy I gave her rope burn. I’ve learned how to catch part of the leash in my mouth and Mommy and I play tug of war.

The other day, Mommy and I were walking together at a farm and she introduced me to a sheep. I wasn’t impressed. That sheep was bigger than me and scary. It also smelled. Mommy said, “Quit hiding behind my legs! You’re a sheep dog. This was what you were made for.” She’s wrong about that. God made me for delighting my Mommy and I do my best to fulfill God’s call for my life.
