Learn From American Churches – Faith

Matt 17:20
If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. KJV

Faith Baptist Church honors their name. They meet in a tiny white building located on Highway Alt 85 in the small town of Woodbury, Georgia. Average congregational attendance is probably between 25-50 people. Led by Pastor Jimmy Bowden and his wife Brenda, this church prays about everything and Brother Jimmy constantly reminds them to have faith. They faithfully study the word of God and meet for prayer services. Faith pays their bills, keeps their church alive, and keeps them encouraged.

I’ve visited this church before. They were actually the first church I visited on the very first Pocket Full of Quarters’ journey. They were the first church to pray for my ministry and me. I’ve also written about this church before on this website (search on Faith Baptist Church) and in my first book, Pocket Full of Quarters.

They are a simple people with simple theology. They believe in the inerrant word of God as presented by the King James translation of the Bible. They don’t believe in women preachers and I was quick to assure them I am a missionary, not a preacher. On Sunday, July 8, 2007, I was privileged to be able to share with them about the Pocket Full of Quarters’ journeys. I spoke from the floor and not the pulpit. While I was speaking, they honored me with their apt attention and when it was over they honored me with affirmations, prayer, and a few monetary gifts.

On the morning of my visit, a tree fell on the home of Brother Jimmy and Brenda. While Brenda had to miss the service to handle the domestic chores associated with such a trauma, faithful Brother Jimmy arrived at Sunday School right on time. He shared the mishap with the congregation but instead of whining or complaining, he praised God no one was hurt.

You won’t find this sweet church on the web. You’ll probably never see them on television or even read about them in religious magazines but they will remain a treasured place of worship for The Pocket Full of Quarters’ Lady. If you ever visit the famous Warm Springs Georgia and the Little White House, do yourself a favor and drive the 10 miles on Alt 85 for the 11:00 AM worship service at Faith Baptist Church in Woodbury, Georgia. I promise they will welcome you and pray for you. You’ll get to sing the melodious four part harmony of the older gospel hymns and will leave with your faith affirmed.
