The Devotional Diva - Has Anyone Ever Told You, You Look Like. . .

“For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son. . .” Romans 8:29 (NAS95)

It doesn’t happen all the time, although frequently. It happens in every place you can imagine: hotels, restaurants, stores, on the street, airports and even at church events. Most recently, it happened at the Women of Faith conference.

It even happened several times at a writer’s conference I attended a few months ago. I was there to learn and meet with a few editors. During one such meeting, the publisher looked at me and said, “Has anyone ever told you, you look like Susan Sarandon?”

I could have finished her sentence, but I just smiled and replied, “Actually quite often – although I haven’t a clue why!” (Truly, I don’t!) Nevertheless, it is flattering. Unfortunately, my perceived resemblance to the million-dollar movie star carried no weight when it came to getting my book published. Now if I could get Susan to endorse it, well, that’s wishful thinking!

We all know someone who looks like someone else. I worked with a person, I swore looked just like Bruce Willis. Then there was the insurance instructor who looked like John Belushi. I think my friend Gail has Sandy Patti’s smile!

There is a study about people who look like their pets. I even heard of a television show that centered on women having plastic surgery to look like their favorite pop stars, on purpose! What a crazy world we live in.

Well, I am not sure how far in life looking like Ms. Sarandon will get me. As far as the writers conference is concerned, it might get me remembered if I sent in a book proposal, “Hey remember me? The Susan Sarandon look-alike?” The problem is I am not Susan Sarandon.

Hey, that’s okay with me. No disrespect meant to the award-winning actress, but God intends for me to be me. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. God intends for me to be like Christ. His plan is for me (and you) to be conformed daily to the image of His Son.

As the days continue forward, I will never mind being asked, “Has anyone ever told you…?” However, my heart’s desire, the thing I covet the most, more than an academy award, would be to hear the words, “Has anyone ever told you, you look like Christ?” To resemble Susan is a compliment, but to resemble the Savior is a far greater thing.

God told Samuel, many centuries ago, that man liked to look on outward appearance, but He preferred to look in man’s heart. Today, if our very heart could take a physical form, whom would it resemble? Would our heart (soul, mind and deeds) look like a Susan, a Bruce or a John, or Jesus?
